NASA AND THE QUEST FOR A BETTER EARTH

 NASA AND THE QUEST FOR A BETTER EARTH

While conspiracies and agendas create confusion in public climate change discussion, the overwhelmingly majority of case specific scientists agree that there is a problem that we humans can take charge of which includes implementing proactive measures to mitigate.

NASA may come to mind to the average Joe as the USA organisation focused on space but as experts on the universe, and our solar system, which of course includes our own planet, they have become one such organisational expert in climate and earth science – and they are ringing alarm bells vigorously. They may not have any role in setting government implemented policies around climate but what they do is provide the scientific data that we need to understand climate change.

The information sourced by NASA is freely available to the global community which includes governments, scientific and planning agencies and we the public.

The common call from those such as NASA who have dived deep into the scientific data around climate change is this – focusing on sustainability is the action that we can all be taking to lower the risks to the environment and ourselves.

NASA realises that it can’t be all talk and no personal action and so in executing its own mission, NASA declares its sustainability objectives as such:

·       increase energy efficiency;

· increase the use of renewable energy;

·       measure, report, and reduce NASA’s direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions;

·       conserve and protect water resources through efficiency, reuse, and stormwater management;

·       eliminate waste, prevent pollution, and increase recycling;

·       leverage agency acquisitions to foster markets for sustainable technologies and environmentally preferable materials, products, and services;

·       design, construct, maintain, and operate high-performance sustainable buildings;

·       utilize power management options and reduce the number of agency data centers;

·       support economic growth and livability of the communities where NASA conducts business;

·       evaluate agency climate change risks and vulnerabilities and develop mitigation and adaptation measures to manage both the short-and long-term effects of climate change on the agency’s mission and operations;

·       raise employee awareness and encourage each individual in the NASA community to apply the concepts of sustainability to every aspect of their daily work to achieve these goals;

·       maintain compliance with all applicable federal, state, local or territorial law and regulations related to energy security, a healthy environment, and environmentally-sound operations; and

·       comply with internal NASA requirements and agreements with other entities.

While we may not be operating our own sustainability efforts to the massive scale of an organisation such as NASA, we too can make our own efforts that help turn our homes into friends rather than enemies of the environment.

We can:

·       increase energy efficiency;

·      increase the use of renewable energy;

·       conserve and protect water resources through efficiency and reuse and

·       eliminate waste, prevent pollution, and increase recycling;

All of these efforts can start today.
