THE SUN REALLY IS AN AUSSIE THING
Written by Nate Hamon
Australia has a long, romantic history with the sun. I know that the whole world can claim that but when we look back on paintings, poetry, song, literature, and other art we can see regular deferential nods to the solar power above us. The sun is almost a character in its own right, when we think about the Aussie way of life and the stories that we tell.
Dorothea Mackellar in her 1908 poem ‘My Country’ wrote a simple line that has resonated through the years and planted itself firmly in the hearts and minds of Australians; “I love a sunburnt country…”
World renowned Australian artist Ken Done will often feature a sun in his Australian-themed work as if to say, “This is our symbol!”

In pretty much every iteration of Baz Luhrmann’s posters for his film ‘Australia’ you’ll find the sun or the colours of the sun as a backdrop to the characters.
When Peter Allen sings about leaving Australia in his classic anthem “I Still Call Australia Home” he sings about leaving the sun as if it is in this country that the sun literally resides.
The sun features prominently on the Aboriginal flag as a representation of life itself.

Life, light, heat, and energy.
The sun is a powerful entity and we have never been more connected to it than we are now as we look to the great flame to help us address our energy needs.
Solar power has over the course of around 180 years (the catalyst to understanding solar power was the discovery of the photovoltaic effect in 1839,) evolved to a point where we can start to disconnect ourselves from our overreliance on being plugged into the grid.
While Australians are lagging a little behind other countries such as Germany and Spain when it comes to solar usage, we are fast waking up to the potential for the sun to become much more to us than our ancestors ever thought possible.
With the creation of solar batteries, which store excess energy collected from the sun via solar panels during the day, even when the sun leaves our skies for the night, we can still benefit from what it has provided.
Thank you sun, Sol, blazing star, for all that you give us. Aussie Aussie Aussie…
