7 Secrets to a Lower Energy Bill

7 Secrets to a Lower Energy Bill

With the cost of energy kicking us in the teeth there’s a question we should all be asking ourselves. How can I reduce the energy being used by the three main energy suckers of my home? That is heating, cooling, and powering.

From being a little more cautious, observant, and smart, to investing in a future that could see you largely take control of your energy usage and consequent costs, here are “7 Secrets to a Lower Energy Bill.”

  1. Use the cold-water setting for washing your clothes. If you do a few loads a week and normally use warm or hot this will save you heaps!

  1. Learn to dress a little warmer or cooler rather than raise or lower the home temperature as a first response.

  1. Make sure that when the air conditioner is on that windows and doors are shut and that you use towels or made-for-purpose draft stoppers at the bottom of doors where there is a gap. Another bonus with this tip is that it also helps block out noise.

  1. Plant trees. This is more about looking ahead to the future but is worth doing now if you haven’t already. Trees provide natural shade and natural home insulation. There’s an old Greek proverb that says, “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” That’s some beautifully unselfish reasoning right there but there are some trees that can be planted that can have your home benefiting from its shade in only a few years. Do some research to find what is ideal for where you live.

  1. Turn off appliances when not in use. If you don’t they will still use energy but give nothing in return.

  1. Use the power of the sun! Install solar panels and even a battery and watch your power bill come down by the 10s of thousands over a few years.
